Phillip Thune obituary (1936 – 2021) – Mason City, IA
Phillip “Phil” Thune, 85, of Manly, IA passed away at his home on November 22, 2021.
A rally in honor of Phil’s life will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 W Walnut St, Manly, IA.
Phillip was born on November 4, 1936 to Gisle and Kathryn (Johnson) Thune. Phil was born and raised in rural Winnebago County, Iowa and was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Winnebago.
Phil attended a one-room country school for 8 years and graduated from Forest City High in 1954. He enlisted in the US Army in 1956 and was discharged from the Finance Corps in 1959. Afterwards Army, he graduated from Waldorf College in 1961 and also attended Drake University.
Phillip has been self-employed most of his life with tax and accounting firms in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Mason City, IA. He has owned Proper Controls for over 20 years, which provided bookkeeping services to small businesses in the northern Iowa area. He really enjoyed his job and many of his clients became good friends. Phil also served as a mediator for several years for the Mason City Dispute Resolution Center, donated his audit expertise to his church and served on Manly City Council for 4 years.
Phil married Jean Braun on August 10, 1975 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, IA. From this union was born a daughter, Ginger (Laidlaw).
Phil enjoyed working in his flower gardens, playing golf, playing pool, camping, remembering farming and going to lunch with friends at the LD gas station.
Phil is survived by his daughters, Ginger (Jamie) Laidlaw, Laura (Jeff) Gude and Melissa (Allen Strickling) Thune; son, Steve (Brenda) Thune; grandchildren: Sam, Rose, Zackery (Alexis), Zoey, Charlotte and Alexander; brothers-in-law, Gary Braun and Raymond (Marlene) Braun; sister-in-law, Marilyn Pederson; and many dear friends.
Phillip was predeceased by his 33-year-old wife, Jean; brothers, David and Michael, as well as an infant twin brother, Thomas; two nieces, Joan and Julie Thune; nephew Jim Thune; and his parents.
