The world of freelancers continues to grow. In 2021, there are more than 6 million freelance professionals in the United States, according to freelancer platform Fiverr’s 2022 Independent Economic Impact Report.
Fiverr defines “independent professionals” as those who earn their income outside of a traditional job, who do not employ other people, and who provide creative services like video production, technical services like IT, and professional services such as accounting. They make up 3.9% of the U.S. workforce and generated an estimated $247 billion in revenue in 2021.
While some of their skills are in regular demand, the work their clients need may change over time. Fiverr analyzed data from its millions of searches on the platform for its Small Business Needs Indexto see which services have seen significant increases in the last six months, compared to the previous six months.
Here are five of those “trendy skills,” as Gali Arnon, chief marketing officer of Fiverr, calls them, and how much freelancers charge for them.
Businesses are always looking for the best ways to reach their customers on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok. Video ads created specifically for these different platforms help them do just that.
The term has seen a 453% growth in searches over the past six months.
Likewise, businesses constantly need social media specialists to create content for their Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube channels and more to ensure they build relationships with their customers.
Projects in this space are “great opportunities for young people,” says Julia Pollak, a labor economist at ZipRecruiterbecause “these are jobs without defined training or experience requirements” other than just knowing how to use the platforms.
A logistics website is a website that helps businesses track freight and transportation to see when their product shipments might arrive, what their delivery costs might be, and more. With so many disruptions to the global supply chain over the past few years, companies looking to build these sites can hope to have a better idea of how best to deliver their products.
This term saw a 268% increase in searches, according to Fiverr.
Three-dimensional CAD or computer-aided design, modeling is used to create digital renderings of a product before it is manufactured. It helps companies get an idea of what their products might look like and how they might perform before investing in building them.
Three-dimensional modeling is also used in industries like architecture, and Fiverr attributes the term’s popularity, in part, to growing interest in the metaverse.
Although 3D CAD modeling has seen a 297% increase in searches over the past six months, the term “has flourished on Fiverr in recent years,” says Arnon, adding that “everything from 3D modeling to CAD modeling 3D and all these new technologies are great opportunities for architects, designers, 3D designers.”
The world of NFTs exploded over the past year. In the past 24 hours alone, at press time, more than $20 million in sales have been made in the space, according to crypto price tracking website CoinMarketCap.
Naturally, “companies are trying to see how they can get into this game and how they can make sure they’re not left behind,” says Pollak, perhaps hiring independent contractors to help them create their own. own unique assets.
The term “NFT art” has seen by far the strongest growth in the last 6 months on the site, jumping 3,504%.
When it comes to working in the world of new technology, experts warn that there are fewer precedents for where it might go. In the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, for example, “you’ve had ups and downs” in interest and demand, says Stéphane Ouellette, CEO of FRNTan institutional capital markets platform.
Still, “a lot of the skills will be transferable,” Pollak says of where Fiverr has grown.
“There will always be a need for tech-savvy entrepreneurs and innovators who can share what they’ve learned,” she says, “and often what happens with technologies is that they don’t may not take off as expected, but there are ripple effects, and they end up being used in different ways.”
Ultimately, if any of the above interests you and you think it could be used in your career in some way, “learn a new skill,” says Arnon, “ I don’t think it will ever be a waste of time.”
